Winter hand and nail care in Andorra: 8 tips

Living in Andorra, or spending the ski season here, has plenty of perks, but your hands feel it: sub-zero temperatures, wind, high-altitude sun and indoor heating dry out the skin and make nails more fragile. These are the tips we share every winter at our salon in Escaldes-Engordany.

1. Always wear gloves outdoors

Cold reduces your skin’s natural hydration. Good gloves are your first line of defence, even for short walks around town.

2. Hand cream after every wash

Hot water and soap strip the skin’s lipids. Keep a cream within reach —in your bag, car or at work— and apply it after washing.

3. Cuticle oil every night

A few drops of oil massaged into the cuticle keep the nail flexible and prevent hangnails and cracks. It’s the habit that makes the biggest difference.

4. Sunscreen on your hands too

On the slopes, radiation is stronger because of the altitude and the snow’s reflection. Hands get sun spots too: apply sunscreen when you go skiing.

5. Hydrate from within

When it’s cold we drink less water without noticing. Staying hydrated shows in your skin and nails.

6. Keep nails a little shorter

In winter nails tend to peel. Keeping them slightly shorter and filing in one direction reduces breakage.

7. A protective manicure

A well-done gel polish manicure or gel nails add a protective layer. If your nails are very weak, start with a repair treatment.

8. Treat yourself to a thermal soak
