Gel polish, gel or acrylic nails: how to choose the right manicure

It’s the question we hear most at the salon: “What should I get, gel polish or gel?”. Both give you beautiful, glossy nails for weeks, but they are not the same thing and they are not for the same purpose. In this guide we explain the differences between gel polish, gel nails, acrylic nails and polygel so you can choose wisely.
Gel polish manicure: long-lasting colour on your natural nail
A gel polish manicure uses a polish that is cured under a lamp. It doesn’t add length: it is applied to your natural nail and keeps colour and shine for 2 to 3 weeks, chip-free and completely dry when you leave the salon.
- Who it’s for: if you like the length of your nails and just want colour that lasts.
- Pros: natural finish, quick, no extensions.
- Keep in mind: it won’t strengthen a very weak nail; if yours break, gel or a repair treatment may suit you better.
Gel nails: natural, flexible and longer
Gel nails are sculpted nails: we build an extension, or an overlay on your own nail, with gel cured under a lamp. The result is light, flexible and very natural.
- Who it’s for: short nails, nails that break, or anyone who wants extra length with a natural look.
- Maintenance: infill every 3–4 weeks.
Acrylic nails: the strongest option
Acrylic is made by mixing a powder and a liquid that hardens in the air. It is the hardest, strongest technique, ideal for extra length and shapes such as stiletto or coffin.
- Who it’s for: if you use your hands a lot or want long nails that can take anything.
- Keep in mind: they are slightly less flexible than gel and should always be removed at the salon.
Polygel: the best of both worlds
Polygel combines the lightness of gel with the strength of acrylic. It is a very comfortable option if you want strong nails without any heavy feeling.
Quick comparison
| Technique | Adds length? | Maintenance | Best if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gel polish | No | Every 2–3 weeks | you want colour on your natural nail |
| Gel | Yes | Infill every 3–4 weeks | you want a natural, flexible finish |
| Acrylic | Yes | Infill every 3–4 weeks | you want maximum strength |
| Polygel | Yes | Infill every 3–4 weeks | you want strength without weight |
What about nail art?
All four techniques work with nail art: French, chrome, baby boomer, encapsulation or rhinestones. Sculpted nails give you more surface for elaborate designs.
How to make your manicure last longer
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
- Moisturise your cuticles daily with an oil.
- Don’t use your nails as tools.
- Never peel off polish or extensions: always have them removed at the salon.
